PURPOSE OF SEMINAR

The purpose of this seminar is to educate the attendee on what to look for when dealing with an older and possibly “historic” home.  It is also intended to provide guidance on how to deal with a potentially “historic building” and how original architectural features can be considered when planning energy efficiency upgrades. Participants will learn:

·         What constitutes a “Historical” building

·         To identify historic architecture found throughout NYS

·         To identify what parts of your historic house may be historically significant and how original features should be considered when planning rehab and energy upgrades

·         The role of the NYS Historic Preservation Office with regards to weatherization

·          How the Energy Code, the Existing Building Code, and the National Register can work mutually for weatherization and rehab.

Presenters from NYS Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation:

·         John Bonafide, Director, Technical Preservation Services

·         Eric Kuchar, Weatherization Specialist

·         James Warren, Historic Sites Restoration

WHY ATTEND?

Have you looked at a building and knew it was old, but wondered why it looked the way it did?  Have you questioned how best to define your project when submitting it for SHPO review?  Why do some homes have window sash divided into 12, 8, 6 or 2 separate panes of glass?  How do NYS Building Codes fit into the work you do?  With hundreds of types of architectural style variations, understanding historical buildings in order to develop the best project can sometimes feel like a daunting task.
